A new film in preparation and the upcoming DVD release of The Freemartin Calf
In April/May I will shoot a new film for FareWell Poetry, a follow-up to Persephone: A Soft Corpse Comfort. The film will be shot, for the most part, in the Scottish Highlands with my friends from L'Orée Collectif. Lidwine will play Persephone and we have been looking into pyrotechnics for the final scene!
The artwork for the LP/DVD release of The Freemartin Calf  on Gizeh (UK) is almost finished and should be out in June 2013. Until then, you can listen to an excerpt of the soundtrack on their 2013 sampler HERE!

FareWell Poetry live at La Loge in Paris for 'l'Etrange Noël de FareWell Poetry'
FareWell Poetry celebrated Christmas in our own strange way with an original scenography by Astrid Méry Sinivassin and guests Lidwine (harmonium, harp, bells & vocals) and Diane Sorel (vocals). An original silk screen print was made for the event by French artist Brian Cougar, a few of these are still available to buy at La Fabrique des Balades Sonores.

FareWell Poetry recording session #1, Mikrokosm Studios, Lyon
We have begun recording our second album with producer Benoît Bel at Mikrokosm Studios in Lyon. This is the first of four sessions that we have planned for the next two months. Pamela Maddaleno, italian filmmaker and photographer, has been following the whole process.
During this first session, we recorded 'April, In The Thawing Ruck' and had a good hack at the fearsome mass that is the soundtrack for 'The Golden House:  For Him I Sought The Woods'.

A few end-of-year reviews for Hoping for the Invisible to Ignite
THE SILENT BALLET - ALBUM OF THE MONTH (CAN):  On the lyrical level, this month's clear standout is an album of heartbreak and hope, of mangled dreams and bittersweet consolation.  It begins as a tragedy, but morphs into a triumph.  On the musical level, it's a reminder of everything we've come to love about post-rock and more.  The crescendos are intense, the valleys are deep and the timbres are diverse.  On the physical level, it's a lavish package of art cards, postcards and an emotionally heavy DVD: a treat for multiple senses.  Hoping for the Invisible to Ignite has heart, soul, mind and strength; it's a champion on every level.

MUSIC IS GOOD (US):  In terms of emotional and lyrical complexity, this is streets ahead of most other post-rock releases, and the music is carefully and effectively married to the poetry, demanding serious attention and rewarding with articulate depth. Listen with care.

FLUID RADIO (UK) : The stand-out aspect of the group’s sound is Ross’ spoken word performance. Her poetry matches the music for epicness, while her quiet, monotone delivery amplifies the release’s sense of distance and estrangement. Ross’ poetry and film contributions help give FareWell Poetry a distinctive identity in a somewhat crowded scene of post-rock/shoegaze/modern orchestral instrumentalists. Add to this their flamboyant and powerful live shows, and you have a meeting of minds and talents that could well go places.

SOUNDWRITER (UK):  I can’t say I’ve ever hard music and lyrics that relate so well, and it’s interesting to hear an album that focuses on the words and builds the music around it. Regardless of how its classified, Hoping for the Invisible to Ignite is an incredibly unique work of art, and one that deserves the attention of any music lover.

FareWell Poetry live at Le Café de La Danse (paris) & Arte Live Web video online

Picture
On December 5th, FareWell Poetry performed at le Café de la Danse in Paris. The setlist included two films: As True As Troilus and The Golden House : For Him I Sought the Woods. Rod Maurice from the Parisian webzine Le Hiboo filmed the live performance and Arte Live Web decided to host 'As True As Troilus' on their revered website.

'FareWell Poetry are more like a Think Tank than a band. And reducing the collective to just music doesn’t do justice to the absolute oeuvre that is Hoping For the Invisible to Ignite. Born of an encounter between a group of eclectic French musicians and the Franco-Australian poet and filmmaker Jayne Amara Ross, FareWell Poetry paints a crepuscular landscape, rising in curls of smoke that seem to implode on high like a cloud bursting into scintillating shards of black. Impossible to catagorise, FareWell poetry reminds me of the dark psychedelia of the Velvet Underground's White Light/ White Heat but firmly seated on an incredible musical sophistication.'

Some reviews of Hoping for the Invisible to Ignite

Picture
Some reviews of 'Hoping for the Invisible to Ignite', including a very thorough and complimentary review by Richard Allen at The Silent Ballet (US):

"Ross' words come across as both challenge and requiem, an impossible tightrope that she somehow manages to cross, in the manner of predecessor poets such as Sylvia Plath and Brigit Pegeen Kelly.  When hearing her intonations for the first time, backed by the cacaphonous hollows of the band, one forgets to breathe; after the exhalation, one gasps, what did I just hear?  In like fashion, those viewing the video are likely to whisper, what did I just see?, followed by the heartbreaking admittance, it will hurt me, but I have to hear it again."  For the full review:  The Silent Ballet

Un Diable Sur le Tympan with Frédéric D. Oberland
In May 2011, Frédéric D. Oberland invited me to perform with him for his 'Un Diable Sur le Tympan', an evening of duos at Saint Mérry church in Paris.  Along with cellist Gaspar Claus, violinist Christelle Lassort and sound effects engineer Maxime Champesme, we performed the soundtrack of my film The Freemartin Calf live.
Below are some photos that I took during soundcheck.
